If your home is in an open area, than every few years should be sufficient since over time your gutters can still build up with shingle granules, dirt and various debris.

Water is your home's biggest enemy. If water isn't drained away from your home than you can potentially have basement flooding or other water damages to your foundation, which can be very costly.
If your gutters are clogged and water starts to build up, when it freezes in the winter, the ice will expand and contract which could cause damage to the gutters and gutter seals. Even the weight from the water/ice and junk in your gutters could be enough to pull the gutters away from the roof and pull out the supporting gutter screws and gutter hangers. There's also water stains, rotting fascia boards and other damages caused by water.
- In winter, if your gutters are clogged than icicles can form on your gutters and break off, hurting someone below.
- If water isn't properly drained away from the home then freezing water can make a skating rink on your walkways causing a risk of falling.
